Collision Awareness System

The challenge

Vehicle-to-vehicle collision incidents are a major hazard within the mining environment. The Mount team was engaged to provide project management services to implement a collision awareness system (CAS) at our client’s mine site. The project covered around 300 heavy and light machines and aimed to reduce the vehicle-to-vehicle interaction risk at the mine.

CAS provides operators with situational awareness of other vehicles in the vicinity via an in-cab display. It also provides location-based configurable alerts of impending collisions, allowing operators sufficient time to respond.

Our client engaged us to deliver the system across the mine site with an 18-month timeframe.

Our approach

We provided project management services to deliver the project, including designing the solution, selecting the installation vendor, procuring the CAS kits, and maintaining operational readiness to sustain the deployment of the system. The Mount team ensured the CAS system was deployed safely as per the client’s standards and managed a smooth transition to operations process.

The results

We successfully deployed the CAS system within the required timeframe along with building processes and a support model, and training the team to maintain the system after its handover to operations.

The solution we implemented has significantly reduced the risk of collisions and accidents during mining operations, particularly during times of low visibility such as dusty environments or night-time operations.
